Must be a 2.4 litre, but anyway ..
>Is there anything I should be careful of?
Apart from general things as oil leakage etc. you should have a look at and ask about the front tooth belt (right word? My technical English is quite poor...), driving the camshaft in submission from the crankshaft (...?). It needs changing about every 70.000km, otherwise it may rip off and so cause severe Motor damage. The change has to be done in a garage and will cost a good thing extra (~1000 DM, depending on where it is done).
Apart from the engine, you should look for corrosion at the seams of where the car is welded together. This is a problem nearly all VW busses have, it's not too bad but sooner or later one has to work on that.
For the "Florida"-equipment I'm sorry I can't advise you.
>Does the gas-heater burner need changing at 10 years (even if the tank and system have been checked)?
At least in Germany it definately does.
>There is no engine service history from 1993 to 1998. The last TUV was fine with no problems, the emissions test was well under the limit and there are no'horrible'noises!
Sounds quite good, if the engine has all of its power, doesn't smoke too heavy and doesn't need too much oil.
>The gear lever feels pretty vague, is this normal?
What exactly do you mean by "feeling vague"?
>Thankyou for all the help - hopefully , I'll be a fellow LT-Freund soon!
You're welcome.
